Comparing the many different forms of chant.
Is it true that there are different forms of chant all with their own idiosyncracies and styles. Very true, that being said Rome chose Solesmes to be the keepers of the Vatican style. For this reason we use the Mocquereau style to the best of our abilites. We will not be task masters in this endeavour, we will simply do our best and continue so long as God wills.
That being said compare these many very different styles of the same chant
First the German style
Then the Italian
And just for giggles, the old roman style. Not seen since before the year 1000.
Gregorian Chant has pride of place in the liturgy. However, we sometimes replace the Gregorian plainchant with Sacred Polyphony. In like manner, could we not sometimes replace the Solemes style, which has pride of place amongst plainchant styles, with others? I'd especially like us to occassionaly some chants with orison/ison (the base line). BTW, although that particular style hasn't been heard in 1000 years or so, the orison/ison (the base line) was used in many places for plainchant, up through at least the 18th century. An instrument was even developed to be used where "Russian Base" type voices were scarce (i.e.: France): the Serpent.
